How Mumble handles your data — plainly.
Last updated 22 August 2026
At Mumble, we take your privacy and the protection of your data seriously. We built Mumble to be private by default: it only listens while you hold the talk key, and only sees your screen the moment you ask it to. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have.
This policy applies to the Mumble macOS application, the Mumble website (joinmumble.com), and the related services we provide.
Whenever we collect information that could identify you personally, we tell you and ask for your permission where required. Examples include requesting your email when you create an account, or asking macOS for permission to use your microphone or screen. You are always in control of what you share.
By downloading Mumble, creating an account, or using our services, you agree to the collection and use of your information as described here. We process product analytics on the basis of our legitimate interest in understanding and improving Mumble; it is on by default and you can opt out at any time in Settings. Where we rely on your consent for anything else, you can withdraw it at any time.
We use the information above to provide, maintain, and improve Mumble: to transcribe your speech and insert it where your cursor is, to answer questions about your screen, to carry out tasks you ask for, to run your account and billing, to communicate with you, and to keep the service secure and reliable.
macOS will ask you to grant these permissions. Mumble uses each only for its stated purpose, and only when you act:
Dictation is processed entirely on your device. Your speech is turned into text by a model that runs on your own Mac; your voice audio is never sent to us or to any third party.
The assistant features do use the cloud. When you talk with the assistant, ask about your screen, or send an agent to carry out a task, the relevant content (your spoken request or question, and a screenshot if one is needed) is sent securely through our backend to trusted AI providers, currently OpenAI and Anthropic, which process it and return a result. Our infrastructure and authentication are provided by Supabase, product analytics by PostHog, and payments by Stripe. These providers process data on our behalf to make Mumble work; we pass content through, we do not sell it.
Your speech is transcribed on your own device and the text is inserted where your cursor is; because that happens locally, we never receive your voice, and we do not store your dictated text unless you explicitly opt in to help improve transcription (off by default, and reversible in Settings). When you use the voice assistant, we keep a short rolling history of your recent conversation turns (as text, not audio) so Mumble can remember context between sessions; this is deleted with your account. We keep account data for as long as you have an account. If you ask us to delete your account, we remove your associated personal data within 14 days, except where we are required to keep certain records by law.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, export, or restrict the processing of your personal data, and to object to certain processing. We comply with applicable data-protection laws, including the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). To exercise any of these rights, email us at hi@joinmumble.com.
You can turn off product analytics at any time in Settings. You can revoke any macOS permission in System Settings → Privacy & Security. You can stop using Mumble and delete your account whenever you like.
Our website uses only the cookies and similar technologies needed to run the site and understand basic, aggregated usage. We do not use them to build advertising profiles.
Data in transit is encrypted with TLS, and your sign-in token is stored securely on your Mac in the macOS Keychain. We follow standard practices to protect your information, but no method of transmission or storage is ever completely secure.
Mumble is not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under the age required to consent in their country.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it except with the providers named above who process it on our behalf to make Mumble work.
We may update this policy as Mumble evolves. We will change the date at the top and, for significant changes, let you know.
